Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Industrial Maintenance and Controls Engineer/Technician is primarily responsible for maintenance, repairs and upgrades to plant machinery and equipment and production processes and to provide recommendations to management regarding any modifications/upgrades to all hardware and software controls for the continuous improvement of technology and safety. This position is based out of the Ayr site, with travel to support other Unilock sites as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Controls downtime by informing production workers of routine mechanical and preventive maintenance techniques and monitoring compliance.






• Repairs and replaces faulty mechanical components as required and by using testing equipment and hand tools to facilitate plant and equipment repairs.
• Troubleshooting and optimizing programs for automated machinery by operating, testing for malfunctions, and verifying repairs to programmable controllers and end devices.
• Maintains equipment, parts, and supplies inventories by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed equipment, parts, and supplies; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipt
• Make recommendations to management for any modifications/upgrades to all hardware and software controls for the continuous improvement of technology and safety.
• Assists plant management with business fundamentals such as planning, budgeting and purchasing.
• Ensure that mechanical modifications/upgrades are completed according to local standards.
• Ensure that up-to-date documentation exists for all modifications and upgrades in the form of schematics, including maintenance and updated plant electrical drawings and schematics to enable efficient troubleshooting of equipment issues.
• Conserves maintenance resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
• Maintains and updates plant drawings / schematics related to blueprints, hydraulic and pneumatic circuits.
• Assist in new plant installations utilizing the specific highly specialized mechanical skill set.
• Prepares maintenance reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trend.
• Liaise with Masa (major equipment supplier) technical personnel as necessary.
• Assists in project management of any mechanical work that will be performed by any outside contractors, ensuring safe work practices.
• Complies with recommendations of the Safety Committee as they relate to modifications of equipment.
• Perform duties in a safe manner and contribute to the health and safety of all persons working/assisting, visiting, or otherwise involved in maintenance or production activities. Perform the duties of the Controls Eng. /Technician in a safe manner.
• Ensure the training of Maintenance Staff on Masa operating and mechanicals systems is ongoing and progressive.
• Ensure Maintenance employee training modules are updated.
• Perform Production employee evaluations.
• Review Production and Maintenance employee training requirements.
• Oversee the training of any trainee in all aspects of installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting techniques.
• Maintain general cleanliness and tidiness of the work area(s).
• All other duties as assigned.




QUALIFICATIONS
• University, college and/or technical college diploma.
• Minimum 7 years Engineering/manufacturing experience in a concrete paver production plant.
• Working knowledge of preventative maintenance programs.
• Experience and knowledge of MS Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint. AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
• Detailed and specific knowledge of TopWerk GMBH manufactured (German based supplier of the majority of Unilock manufacturing equipment) controls and operating systems for the manufacturing of dry and wet cast concrete, including the ability to operate said equipment. This may include machine brands such as Masa and Hess.
• Experience working with concrete batching plants in either operations or maintenance.
• Knowledge and experience of pneumatic and hydraulic control systems is required.
• Experience developing concrete products for new markets and facilitating the development of the manufacturing process. Focus on pavers and retaining walls.
• Experience with analysis on production down time reporting and utilization of data to improve manufacturing processes.
• Experience with automated coating, grinding, polishing and shot blasting lines is an asset.
• Knowledge of European and Canadian Safety Authority (CSA) electrical standards – electrical and electronic schematic reading, interpretation and composition.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• The ability to train and motivate employees.
• Requires standing, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 50 lbs. Requires the ability to perform work with hands and/or arms in the same repetitive motion above and below shoulder level.
