Job Duties:
1. Installation of Fire Sprinkler Systems
• System Design Review: Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and building plans to determine the proper layout of fire sprinkler systems.
• Pipe Installation: Install and assemble sprinkler pipes, valves, sprinkler heads, and related components according to the specifications and codes. This may include cutting, threading, and welding pipes.
• Mounting Sprinkler Heads: Install and secure sprinkler heads to ceilings or walls, ensuring proper alignment and coverage for optimal fire suppression.
• Water Supply Connection: Connect the sprinkler system to the building’s water supply, including pumps and backflow prevention devices as necessary.
• Coordination with Other Trades: Work closely with other trades, such as electricians and general contractors, to ensure the sprinkler system is integrated into the overall building system.
2. System Testing and Commissioning
• Pressure Testing: Perform system pressure tests to verify the integrity of the piping and ensure there are no leaks. Adjust the system as needed.
• Flow Testing: Conduct water flow and sprinkler head performance tests to ensure that the system provides the required water pressure and distribution.
• Code Compliance Checks: Ensure all installations meet the British Columbia Building Code (BCBC), National Fire Code of Canada (NFCC), and other relevant standards. This includes ensuring proper spacing, coverage, and flow rates.
• System Commissioning: Finalize system setup by testing for functionality and ensuring it is fully operational and compliant with fire safety regulations before handover to the client.
3. Maintenance and Repair
• Routine Inspections: Conduct regular inspections of installed fire sprinkler systems to check for any damage, wear, or signs of malfunction.
• Repairs and Replacements: Identify faulty or damaged sprinkler heads, pipes, valves, or other system components and perform repairs or replacements as needed.
• System Upgrades: Upgrade or retrofit older sprinkler systems to meet current fire protection codes, ensuring that outdated components are replaced with modern, compliant systems.
• Emergency Service: Respond to emergency service calls to repair or restore sprinkler systems in the event of malfunctions or failures, especially after a fire or during system activation tests.
4. Code Compliance and Safety
• Adherence to Codes and Standards: Ensure all installations, inspections, and repairs are done in compliance with local, provincial, and national fire safety regulations, such as:
o British Columbia Building Code (BCBC)
o National Fire Code of Canada (NFCC)
o NFPA 13 (Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems)
o WorkSafeBC regulations for workplace health and safety
• Health and Safety Protocols: Follow WorkSafeBC guidelines to maintain a safe work environment, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), fall protection, and handling hazardous materials.
• Fire Safety Awareness: Stay up to date with fire safety best practices and code changes to ensure compliance and effectiveness of fire protection systems.
5. Documentation and Reporting
• Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate records of installations, inspections, repairs, and maintenance work. These records may be required for insurance, safety audits, or code compliance.
• Inspection Reports: Submit detailed inspection and test reports to clients or building owners, ensuring they have documentation proving the system is compliant with fire safety regulations.
• Certification: Provide clients with certification of system functionality or compliance following installation, inspection, or testing.
6. Emergency Response and Troubleshooting
• Respond to Emergency Calls: Provide emergency services for sprinkler system failures, leaks, or malfunctions, particularly in high-risk situations like active fires or system breakdowns.
• Troubleshooting: Quickly diagnose issues with sprinkler systems and take corrective action to restore the system to full functionality.
7. Collaboration and Client Communication
• Liaise with Clients: Communicate with clients regarding the status of installations, repairs, or inspections. Provide guidance on the operation and maintenance of fire sprinkler systems.
• Work with Contractors and Engineers: Collaborate with general contractors, electrical engineers, and other building trades to coordinate the integration of fire sprinkler systems into the overall building infrastructure.
• Training and Education: Provide guidance or training to clients on how to maintain and operate their sprinkler systems and conduct regular testing.
Minimum Education: completion of high school
